JackRabbit Program

Birch Brook ski club has an active Jackrabbit program. Approximately 30 children have  participated in the program  for the last several years . We usually have six instructors for the group, with a 1 to 5 ratio. The lessons are held on Saturday afternoon from 1 pm to 3 pm . During that time the parents can also avail of instruction from one of our members. The club has a cache of rental skis which can be rented for $5.00 a day. Time trials over half a km provide some challenges for the kids. Of course, kids invent their own competitions after the instructions and simply don't want to go home.

Parents are asked to register their children  with Cathy Jong , sometime before the start of the season. A deadline date will be made public. The program runs for six weekends and usually starts the middle of January.

The province of Newfoundland and Labrador has a growing problem with overweight  and inactive children . Medical problems such as type II diabetes, normally seen in adults is  starting to appear in children. To combat this and other medical problems give your child the opportunity to strap on a pair of skis . Lets follow the example of Norway, Sweden and Finland where skiers far outnumber skidoers and I'm sure the health problems will be  reduced.

The jackrabbit program are having their first races in the morning (Feb 4 th). Good luck to all!!!!!
